Reasons to Love & Embrace GDPR

February 14, 2018

What’s there to not love about GDPR – and its 11 Chapters and 99 Articles!

Is GDPR effort tedious? Undeniably, yes.

But nothing this great ever comes easy at first. The opportunities are well worth loving and embracing GDPR as your catalyst to look beyond conventional check-box compliance practices.

Improve internal relationships

This is a favorite! This means if your business units are not yet working together on the GDPR effort and decision-making lacks consultation of the various departments within or you’re not aligning business and technology, it will manifest in your overall non-compliance results. You could get away with this before. But GDPR won’t have it. It requires all areas of the organization, teams, units, groups, liaisons, leads, and more to turn the data protection compliance wheel. Being forced to work together raises data protection awareness to higher level. You’ll find there’s much opportunity in learning what the priorities and concerns of other business functions are, and this will result in making better organizational decisions regarding data protection.

Heightened customer trust & loyalty

Does competitive advantage mean anything to your business? At the end of the day who are you trying to serve and please? Your customers. Would you like customers to churn your business because your competitor is more responsive to their concerns? Without your employees you have just office equipment and office space. Also, your business cannot survive without the need for business partners and vendors that’ll cooperate in meeting your business goals. Whether you’re a controller or processor GDPR rules or mechanisms for consent, personal data handling, processing and transfers keeps all the players aware, honest, transparent, and obligated to remain so.

Improved global data security relationships

Data Protection Officers (DPO), the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) indicates are a rare breed as purple squirrels. Thanks to GDPR, they continue to mushroom in organizations across the globe to help influence more ethical, fair, and legitimate collection, processing, and security of personal data. And, because of GDPR requirements and defined responsibilities of the DPO, with use of technology and role-based better training, the DPO will influence better risk management relationships and a reduction in data breaches across companies, industries, and jurisdictions.

Let’s face it, you’ve known these benefits but your organization hasn’t realized them. GDPR is acting as your better-half. It’s forcing organizations like yours to take actionable steps to respect and protect EU data subjects’ rights, communicate better, demonstrate accountability,  and to walk their talk. This way, it’s a win-win for everyone – customers, businesses, employees, and business partners.

GDPR is offering a global market place that’s safer for conducting business. You know for a fact that all organizations are being held to a higher privacy standard. That means better accountability. It takes away uncertainty and risks. Let’s discuss other GDPR benefits in detail. THE PRIVACY ADVOCATE will help your business make decisions that will set your business apart, help you exercise proper respect for personal information, meet your business, legal, and compliance obligations.
