GDPR: No Mercy, No Grace Period?

April 19, 2018

You still haven’t done your GDPR homework?

Or, maybe you’re half-way there, or you feel you’ve already made significant progress.

Still. Progress is in the eye of the beholder. It’s possible that the beholding EU regulator you encounter may see your 80% progress as a mere 10%. Maybe if you have a roadmap to get things done by July it might be your saving grace until December – you think?

Is yours one of many unprepared businesses hoping and praying that something of global significant happens on May 25, 2018 that’ll stop 28 EU member states’ supervisory authorities from enforcing GDPR? What about a grace period?

I can answer that. This week in London at the IAPP’s Data Protection Intensive, it appears to everyone that even if the sun refuses to shine on May 25, that DPAs are ready to light candles, issue and process fines. Seriously? Sounds like the best way to go is to keep working on complying with GDPR. You can’t relax now.

Here’s an article written by IAPP’s own Angelique Carson on location in London.

“In a session at the IAPP Data Protection Intensive here in London today, representatives from four European data protection authorities offices were on hand to share some insights into what their offices are doing to prepare for the General Data Protection Regulation’s forthcoming implementation, and judging by the number of folks standing in the back of the largest breakout session room on site, the DPAs were just the folks privacy professionals were hoping to hear from.” Read the full story.
